Manchester United will have to make do without Carlos Baleba for several weeks. On 6 November, two days before hosting Aston Villa, Michael Carrick said the Cameroonian midfielder would be unavailable both for that match and during the international break. The manager did not give a return date, however: the full extent of the hamstring injury is still to be determined. The timeframe announced extends a season already interrupted by an ankle injury and forces Carrick to reassess his options at a time when the club is still looking for consistency.

An injury sustained during an otherwise thrilling evening

Baleba was injured on Tuesday 3 November, during United’s 3-2 victory over AS Roma in the Champions League. Shortly after the restart, he surged towards the opposition penalty area before stopping and holding the back of his thigh. Youri Tielemans replaced him. In his first medical update after the match, Carrick confirmed a hamstring injury but was unable to assess its severity. The club’s initial statement did not give a timeframe at that point.

Friday’s update therefore mainly changes the outlook: this is no longer just a likely absence against Villa. “Several weeks,” Carrick explained at a press conference, according to the report published by Manchester United. The club confirmed that the player would miss Sunday’s fixture, then clarified that his absence would extend beyond the November international break. The Reuters news agency also reported the manager’s statement and highlighted the lack of a more precise timeframe.

A return expected after the break, but no date set

Carrick’s wording rules out announcing a firm return date. United does not yet know exactly how long Baleba will be unavailable; the medical staff will have to monitor the injury before specifying when he can return. The player will not be fit during the international window that follows the match against Aston Villa. At this stage, that does not mean he will automatically be ready for the return of league action.

The fixture list nevertheless gives an idea of the immediate stakes. After the break, United travel to Liverpool on 22 November, then play Sporting in the Champions League on 25 November and host Brentford on 28 November. These fixtures are listed in the schedule highlighted by the Manchester club’s official website. They provide reference points, not return dates: the club has not confirmed which matches Baleba might miss beyond the Villa game.

Tielemans, an option already tried

The substitution against Roma gives Carrick an immediate solution, at least in terms of personnel: Tielemans came on for Baleba during the match. The manager praised his contribution after coming on but did not confirm whether he would start against Aston Villa. The decision will also depend on the balance Carrick wants in midfield and the fitness of the other available players.

The injury comes just as Baleba had regained an important place in the rotation. According to the club, the Cameroonian had made seven appearances in all competitions since his summer arrival from Brighton. His start to the season had already been delayed by an ankle problem, and this latest spell on the sidelines interrupts a period in which he was beginning to play regularly. The context calls for caution: it is not yet possible to measure the sporting impact of his absence, but Carrick loses a recently integrated option at a time when the team is building its understanding.

A management issue as much as a selection one

The challenge is not limited to finding a like-for-like replacement. Absences are forcing the manager to work around changing availability within his squad. Carrick also mentioned Patrick Dorgu, who has returned to partial training, but whose availability against Villa is uncertain. The club says it wants to manage his return gradually after several muscle problems. Again, this is a possibility, not confirmed availability.

In this context, the staff will have to weigh up continuity and caution. Playing a player too soon after a return could cause another setback; changing the midfield structure, on the other hand, may require time to establish new patterns. This is an interpretation of the situation, not a decision announced by Carrick. With the international break only days away, Baleba’s absence nevertheless reduces the room for manoeuvre, particularly if the match against Villa requires changes during the game.

What the update does not say

The information made public on 6 November confirms a hamstring injury and an absence of several weeks, but gives neither the grade of the injury nor a return date. More precise estimates circulating in some media have not been confirmed by the club and should not be presented as a diagnosis. The next useful step will therefore be a further medical assessment or a United announcement, rather than projections based solely on the fixture list.

For Carrick, the immediate priority is preparing for Aston Villa without Baleba and maintaining a coherent midfield structure before the break. For the player, the aim will be to return without rushing after another spell out. The victory over Roma renewed hope around the team, but confirmation of this injury is a reminder that a single result does not solve availability problems or the need to build over time. What happens next will depend as much on Baleba’s recovery as on United’s ability to get through the coming weeks with collective solutions.
